Faculty Use Cases
Genomics and Bioinformatics Core Research
The Genomics and Bioinformatics Research (GenBAR) community at CUIMC uses AWS cloud computing resources to analyze large-scale sequencing and multi-omics datasets that can rapidly grow into the terabyte range. AWS provides elastic compute capacity and scalable storage that allow researchers to run computationally intensive genomic workflows, accelerate analysis timelines, and collaborate more effectively with investigators across Columbia and partner institutions.
CUIMC Department of Neurology
The Department of Neurology has emerged as one of CUIMC's largest adopters of AWS for research computing and data management. Neurology researchers use AWS to support high-performance computing (HPC) workloads, large-scale research data storage, machine learning and AI initiatives, and cloud-based biomedical research platforms. Departmental IT teams have migrated research infrastructure and HPC operations to AWS, where multiple laboratories share governed cloud resources for data processing and analysis. Current efforts include cloud-hosted EEG and neurocritical care research platforms, AI-driven analysis of clinical and research data, and secure management of large research datasets spanning multiple labs and projects. AWS has become a foundational component of Neurology's research technology strategy, providing scalable computing, storage, and advanced analytics capabilities that support diverse neuroscience, clinical, and translational research programs.
