Microsoft 365 Security Requirements as of October 15th

Microsoft has deprecated(discontinued) the use of encryption protocol TLS versions 1.0 and 1.1 as of October 15th, 2020.

What does this mean?

Encryption protocols are used to securely connect your computer or mobile device to a service or application online.  These older TLS versions are no longer used by most current web browsers, operating systems, and programs.  Anyone still using an old browser etc. after October 15th will not be able to use it to connect to their Microsoft 365 account, which includes CUIMC email, Teams, and other online Office 365 applications.

What should I do?

If you are using any of the following browsers or versions, please update them to a current version.

  • Android 4.3 and earlier versions - see our Android Versions and Updates page for help
  • Firefox version 5.0 and earlier versions
  • Internet Explorer 8-10 on Windows 7 and earlier versions
  • Internet Explorer 10 on Windows Phone 8
  • Safari 6.0.4/OS X10.8.4 and earlier versions

For general help updating please see Columbia's Keep Your OS Up to Date.  Most web browsers can be updated by opening the browser, selecting Help in a menu bar at the top of the browser window, selecting About <browser name> and then any option to update or check for updates

We also strongly recommend making sure you are using Outlook 365 or later for your email program on any computer in preparation of another older security method, Basic Authentication, being discontinued at on June 1st, 2021.

Additional Help

We do not expect this to impact many at CUIMC, and have contacted Certified IT Groups with a list of accounts that have recently connected to CUIMC Microsoft 365 using TLS 1.0 or 1.1 to assist with upgrading if needed.  Please contact us with any specific questions.
